The comorbidities of obesity

Obesity contributes to numerous comorbid conditions. Obese patients are at increased risk of developing many medical problems, including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease, stroke, sleep apnea, gall bladder disease, hyperuricemia, gout, osteoarthritis and even certain cancers.
Current obesity comorbidity research has several important lines of investigation. The proportional importance of subcutaneous versus visceral fat in producing comorbidities and the impact of adipose tissue inflammation are significant topics. It is also important to elucidate the independent contributions of diet and sedentariness to the development of each of the comorbidities. Furthermore, the impact of gender, race and duration of a given state must be clarified. Obesity and its comorbidities have complex interactions and multiple influencing factors. Performing any obesity comorbidity study requires in-depth knowledge of metabolic conditions, obesity and clinical trials.
